Designation of whether the aortic arch crosses to the left or right side of the trachea.
Full Definition
Aortic arch sidedness describes the anatomical relationship of the aortic arch to the airway structures, classified as either left-sided (normal) or right-sided arch. Right aortic arch occurs in approximately 0.1% of the population and may be associated with congenital heart disease, particularly tetralogy of Fallot and truncus arteriosus. The determination of arch sidedness is important for surgical planning and understanding associated anomalies, including vascular rings and aberrant subclavian arteries.
