aortic root

The portion of the left ventricular outflow tract that includes the aortic valve annulus, sinuses of Valsalva, and proximal ascending aorta.

Full Definition

The aortic root is a complex anatomic structure comprising the aortic valve annulus, the three sinuses of Valsalva, and the sinotubular junction where the root meets the ascending aorta. This region is frequently involved in congenital heart disease, including bicuspid aortic valve with associated root dilation, subaortic stenosis, and various forms of left heart obstructive lesions. Aortic root dimensions are carefully measured during echocardiography and other imaging studies, as enlargement may indicate the need for surgical intervention. The coronary arteries arise from the right and left sinuses of Valsalva within the aortic root.

Usage

Usage note: Distinguish from the broader ascending aorta, which extends beyond the sinotubular junction.
