arterial switch operation

A surgical procedure to correct transposition of the great arteries by switching the aorta and pulmonary artery to their anatomically correct positions.

Full Definition

The arterial switch operation (ASO) is the preferred surgical treatment for transposition of the great arteries, involving transection and anastomosis of the great vessels to their anatomically correct ventricles. The procedure includes coronary artery transfer from the original aortic root to the neo-aortic root. The ASO must be performed within the first few weeks of life while the left ventricle can still support systemic circulation. Successful ASO results in anatomic and physiologic correction with excellent long-term outcomes. The procedure requires expertise in neonatal cardiac surgery and has largely replaced the atrial switch operations.

Usage

Usage note: Preferred over atrial switch procedures; specify timing relative to birth when documenting.

In Context

  • "The arterial switch operation was completed with successful coronary artery transfer and great vessel reconstruction." — Operative report
  • "Long-term follow-up after arterial switch operation showed normal biventricular function." — Cardiology consultation
