neo-aortic root

The reconstructed aortic root following arterial switch operation, formed from the former pulmonary root.

Full Definition

The neo-aortic root is the newly constructed aortic root created during arterial switch operation for transposition of the great arteries. In this procedure, the pulmonary artery is moved to the aortic position and must accommodate systemic pressures and coronary artery reimplantation. Long-term complications can include neo-aortic root dilatation, neo-aortic regurgitation, and coronary artery stenosis. Regular echocardiographic surveillance is essential to monitor neo-aortic root dimensions and function, as progressive dilatation may require surgical intervention to prevent complications.
