Patch aortoplasty is a surgical technique used to repair aortic coarctation by opening the narrowed segment longitudinally and inserting a patch to widen the aortic lumen. This approach is particularly useful when the coarctation segment is long or when tension-free end-to-end anastomosis is not feasible. Various patch materials can be used, including synthetic materials like PTFE or Dacron, biological patches such as pericardium, or subclavian artery flap (Waldhausen procedure). The technique preserves the entire aortic circumference and can accommodate growth, making it suitable for various patient sizes. However, patch aortoplasty carries a risk of late aneurysm formation at the patch site, necessitating long-term imaging surveillance. The procedure may be combined with other cardiac repairs in complex cases.
