Pulmonary Valve Stenosis

Narrowing of the pulmonary valve that obstructs blood flow from the right ventricle to the pulmonary arteries.

Full Definition

Pulmonary valve stenosis is a congenital heart defect characterized by narrowing or fusion of the pulmonary valve leaflets, resulting in obstruction of blood flow from the right ventricle to the pulmonary circulation. The condition can range from mild to severe and may require balloon valvuloplasty or surgical intervention. In severe cases, it can lead to right heart failure and cyanosis. The degree of stenosis is typically classified by the pressure gradient across the valve.

Usage

Usage note: Often abbreviated as PS in clinical notes; distinguish from peripheral pulmonic stenosis.
