Pulmonary Artery Banding

A palliative surgical procedure that places a constricting band around the main pulmonary artery to limit excessive pulmonary blood flow.

Full Definition

Pulmonary artery banding is a palliative surgical intervention involving the placement of a synthetic band around the main pulmonary artery to create artificial stenosis. This procedure is performed to protect the pulmonary vascular bed from excessive blood flow and pressure in patients with large left-to-right shunts or as a preparatory step for future biventricular repair. The band can be adjusted or removed during subsequent procedures. It is commonly used in infants who are too small or unstable for complete repair.

Usage

Usage note: Commonly abbreviated as PA banding; distinguish from definitive repair procedures.
