Systemic-to-Pulmonary Collateral Arteries

Abnormal vascular connections that develop between systemic arteries and pulmonary circulation, typically in patients with reduced pulmonary blood flow.

Full Definition

Systemic-to-pulmonary collateral arteries are abnormal vascular connections that form between the systemic circulation and the pulmonary vascular bed, most commonly seen in patients with cyanotic congenital heart disease and diminished pulmonary blood flow. These collaterals may be congenital (major aortopulmonary collateral arteries or MAPCAs) or acquired. While they can provide beneficial additional pulmonary blood flow, they may also cause volume overload, steal phenomenon, pulmonary hypertension, and complicate surgical repair. Management often requires coil occlusion or surgical ligation.
