total anomalous pulmonary venous return

A congenital heart defect where all pulmonary veins connect abnormally to the systemic venous circulation instead of the left atrium.

Full Definition

Total anomalous pulmonary venous return (TAPVR) is a cyanotic congenital heart defect in which all four pulmonary veins drain abnormally to the systemic venous circulation rather than directly to the left atrium. TAPVR is classified anatomically as supracardiac (above the heart), cardiac (to coronary sinus or right atrium), infracardiac (below the diaphragm), or mixed. The condition requires an atrial septal defect for survival to allow oxygenated blood to reach the systemic circulation. Surgical repair involves redirecting all pulmonary veins to the left atrium and closing the atrial septal defect. Obstructed TAPVR is a surgical emergency.

Usage

Usage note: Distinguish obstructed from non-obstructed forms; specify anatomic type in documentation.
