Transcatheter Device Closure

A minimally invasive procedure using implantable devices delivered via cardiac catheterization to close septal defects or vascular communications.

Full Definition

Transcatheter device closure refers to the percutaneous placement of occlusion devices to close various cardiovascular defects including atrial septal defects, ventricular septal defects, patent ductus arteriosus, and patent foramen ovale. These procedures are performed in the cardiac catheterization laboratory using fluoroscopic and echocardiographic guidance. Device selection depends on defect size, location, and surrounding anatomy. This approach offers advantages over surgical closure including shorter hospital stays, reduced morbidity, and excellent cosmetic results, though not all defects are suitable for device closure.
