Full Definition

A pathological condition resulting from an accumulation of acid or loss of bicarbonate in body fluids, leading to a decrease in blood pH below normal range (less than 7.35). Acidosis can be respiratory (due to CO2 retention from inadequate ventilation) or metabolic (from increased acid production, decreased acid excretion, or bicarbonate loss). In critically ill children, acidosis often indicates severe illness and requires prompt identification and correction of the underlying cause.
