bronchospasm

Sudden constriction of bronchial muscles causing narrowing of airways and breathing difficulty.

Full Definition

A pathological condition involving the involuntary contraction of smooth muscle in the bronchi and bronchioles, resulting in airway narrowing and increased resistance to airflow. In pediatric patients, bronchospasm can be triggered by asthma, allergic reactions, respiratory infections, or mechanical irritation from procedures. It manifests as wheezing, increased work of breathing, and potential respiratory distress requiring immediate bronchodilator therapy.

Usage note: Plural form is 'bronchospasms' when referring to multiple episodes.
