Full Definition

Continuous venovenous hemofiltration (CVVH) is a form of continuous renal replacement therapy that provides slow, continuous removal of fluid and solutes from the blood. Unlike intermittent hemodialysis, CVVH operates 24 hours a day with gradual fluid and electrolyte shifts, making it ideal for hemodynamically unstable pediatric patients. The process involves pumping blood through a hemofilter where ultrafiltration removes excess fluid and waste products. CVVH is particularly valuable in pediatric critical care for managing acute kidney injury, severe fluid overload, electrolyte imbalances, and removal of certain toxins. The continuous nature allows for precise fluid balance control and minimizes rapid shifts that could be detrimental to critically ill children.
