Full Definition
A clinical sign manifesting as a blue or purple discoloration of the skin, nail beds, lips, or mucous membranes, resulting from increased concentrations of deoxygenated hemoglobin in the blood. In pediatric patients, cyanosis can be central (involving lips and mucous membranes, indicating serious cardiopulmonary compromise) or peripheral (limited to extremities, often related to poor circulation). Recognition of cyanosis is crucial for identifying hypoxemia and respiratory or cardiac emergencies.
