The Pediatric Index of Mortality 3 (PIM-3) is a widely used severity-of-illness scoring system that predicts the risk of hospital death for children admitted to intensive care. Unlike other scoring systems, PIM-3 uses data collected at the time of first contact with the ICU team, before intensive care treatment begins, making it less susceptible to treatment effects. The model incorporates factors such as diagnosis, pupil reactivity, and mechanical ventilation requirements to generate a probability of death, enabling risk adjustment for quality improvement and research purposes.
