ventilator-associated pneumonia

A type of hospital-acquired pneumonia that develops in mechanically ventilated patients more than 48-72 hours after endotracheal intubation.

Full Definition

Ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) is a serious nosocomial infection that occurs in critically ill pediatric patients who are mechanically ventilated. It typically develops 48-72 hours or more after intubation and mechanical ventilation begins. VAP represents one of the most common healthcare-associated infections in PICUs and is associated with increased morbidity, mortality, and healthcare costs. Prevention bundles and early recognition are crucial components of pediatric critical care management.

Usage

Usage note: Often abbreviated as VAP in clinical documentation.
