transient neonatal pustular melanosis

A benign pustular condition in newborns that resolves quickly, leaving temporary hyperpigmented macules.

Full Definition

Transient neonatal pustular melanosis (TNPM) is a benign, self-limited pustular eruption that primarily affects Black newborns. The condition presents with superficial pustules that rupture easily, leaving collarettes of scale surrounding hyperpigmented macules. The pustules contain neutrophils but are sterile. Lesions can be present at birth or develop within the first few days of life, and the pustular phase resolves within days to weeks. The resulting hyperpigmentation may persist for months. Medical writers must distinguish TNPM from infectious pustular conditions and emphasize its benign, self-resolving nature.

Usage

Usage note: Often abbreviated as TNPM. Emphasize the transient nature and benign prognosis. More common in Black infants.
