Radiological assessment of skeletal maturity used to evaluate growth and pubertal development.

Full Definition

A measurement of skeletal maturation determined by comparing a child's hand and wrist X-ray to standardized reference images. Bone age helps assess whether a child's physical development is proceeding normally and is crucial in pediatric endocrinology for evaluating growth disorders, predicting final adult height, and monitoring pubertal development. The most commonly used methods are the Greulich-Pyle atlas and the Tanner-Whitehouse system. Bone age may be advanced, delayed, or concordant with chronological age, providing important diagnostic and prognostic information.
