A substance that interferes with thyroid hormone synthesis or iodine uptake, potentially causing goiter formation in children.

Full Definition

Goitrogens are compounds that disrupt normal thyroid function by interfering with iodine uptake, thyroid hormone synthesis, or thyroid hormone metabolism. In pediatric endocrinology, exposure to goitrogens through diet, medications, or environmental sources can lead to thyroid enlargement (goiter) and hypothyroidism in growing children. Common dietary goitrogens include cruciferous vegetables, soy products, and cassava. Certain medications such as lithium and amiodarone also have goitrogenic effects. Understanding goitrogen exposure is important when evaluating children with thyroid dysfunction.
