Theoretical mechanism that controls the onset of puberty by modulating gonadotropin sensitivity.

Full Definition

The gonadostat is a theoretical regulatory system that controls the timing of pubertal onset through changes in sensitivity to gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) and gonadotropins. During childhood, the gonadostat maintains high sensitivity to sex steroids, keeping gonadotropin levels low. As puberty approaches, the gonadostat 'resets' with decreased sensitivity, allowing increased gonadotropin secretion and subsequent pubertal development. This concept helps explain the mechanisms underlying normal pubertal timing as well as disorders of pubertal onset such as precocious or delayed puberty.
