Full Definition

Gonadotropin-independent precocious puberty, also known as peripheral precocious puberty or pseudoprecocious puberty, occurs when sex hormones are produced autonomously without stimulation from the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis. This condition can result from gonadal tumors, adrenal disorders, or exogenous hormone exposure. Unlike central precocious puberty, gonadotropin levels remain suppressed while sex hormone levels are elevated. The condition requires prompt evaluation to identify and treat underlying causes, which may be life-threatening. Treatment focuses on addressing the primary disorder rather than suppressing gonadotropin release.
