Gonadotropin independence refers to sexual development that occurs without stimulation from the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis. This phenomenon is characteristic of peripheral (pseudoprecocious) puberty, where sex hormone production occurs independently of luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) stimulation. Causes include autonomous ovarian cysts, testicular tumors, adrenal disorders, or conditions like McCune-Albright syndrome. Unlike central precocious puberty, gonadotropin-independent sexual development does not respond to GnRH analog therapy and requires treatment directed at the underlying hormone-producing source.
