height velocity

Rate of linear growth over a specified time period, typically expressed in centimeters per year.

Full Definition

A quantitative measurement of a child's growth rate calculated by dividing the change in height by the time interval over which the measurement was obtained. Height velocity is most accurately determined over a minimum of 6-12 months to account for seasonal variation and measurement error. Normal height velocity varies with age, being highest during infancy (approximately 25 cm/year in the first year), decreasing through childhood (5-7 cm/year), and increasing again during the pubertal growth spurt. Abnormally low height velocity may indicate growth hormone deficiency, chronic illness, or other endocrine disorders. This measurement is more sensitive than height percentiles alone for detecting growth abnormalities.
