OGTT

Also written as: OGTT — Oral Glucose Tolerance Test

Oral glucose tolerance test, a diagnostic procedure measuring glucose levels after consuming a standardized glucose solution.

Full Definition

The oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) is a standardized diagnostic procedure used to evaluate glucose metabolism and diagnose diabetes or glucose intolerance in children and adolescents. The test involves measuring fasting glucose levels, followed by administration of a glucose solution (1.75 g/kg body weight, maximum 75g), with subsequent glucose measurements at specific intervals. In pediatric endocrinology, OGTT is particularly useful for diagnosing type 2 diabetes, prediabetes, and glucose intolerance in obese children or those with risk factors. The test requires proper preparation including fasting and normal carbohydrate intake in preceding days.

Usage

Usage note: Specify glucose dose when documenting; pediatric dosing differs from adult protocols.

In Context

  • "The OGTT revealed impaired glucose tolerance with a 2-hour value of 155 mg/dL." — Laboratory report
  • "An OGTT was ordered to evaluate glucose metabolism in this obese adolescent with acanthosis nigricans." — Clinical assessment
