Full Definition
Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) is an increasingly recognized chronic inflammatory condition characterized by symptoms of esophageal dysfunction and eosinophil-predominant inflammation confined to the esophagus. In pediatric patients, presenting symptoms include feeding difficulties, food refusal, vomiting, and failure to thrive in younger children, while older children and adolescents may present with dysphagia and food impaction. Diagnosis requires both clinical symptoms and histologic evidence of ≥15 eosinophils per high-power field on esophageal biopsy after excluding other causes of esophageal eosinophilia.
Usage
Usage note: Abbreviation EoE is widely accepted in medical documentation.
