VACTERL association
Also written as: VACTERL — Vertebral defects, Anal atresia, Cardiac defects, Tracheoesophageal fistula, Renal anomalies, Limb defects
Constellation of congenital anomalies affecting multiple organ systems in newborns.
Full Definition
VACTERL association refers to a non-random pattern of congenital malformations that includes Vertebral defects, Anal atresia, Cardiac defects, Tracheoesophageal fistula, Renal anomalies, and Limb defects. While not a syndrome with a known genetic cause, the association occurs more frequently than would be expected by chance. Diagnosis requires the presence of at least three of the component features. Patients often require multidisciplinary care involving pediatric surgery, cardiology, urology, and orthopedics. The prognosis varies depending on the severity and number of involved systems.
Usage
Usage note: Prefer 'association' over 'syndrome' as the etiology is not fully understood.
