volvulus

Pronunciation: VOL-vyuh-lus

Twisting of a portion of the intestine around its mesentery, causing obstruction and potential ischemia.

Full Definition

Volvulus refers to the abnormal twisting or rotation of a segment of bowel around its mesenteric axis, resulting in intestinal obstruction and compromised blood supply. In pediatric patients, midgut volvulus is particularly concerning as it can occur secondary to intestinal malrotation and may lead to catastrophic bowel necrosis if not promptly recognized and treated. The condition typically presents with acute abdominal pain, vomiting, and signs of intestinal obstruction. Sigmoid volvulus, while more common in elderly adults, can occasionally occur in children with underlying conditions.

Usage

Usage note: Distinguish between midgut volvulus (emergency) and other types; specify anatomical location when known.
