Erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) is a laboratory test that measures the rate at which red blood cells settle to the bottom of a vertical tube over one hour, expressed in millimeters per hour. In pediatric hematology, ESR serves as a non-specific marker of inflammation and can be elevated in various conditions including infections, autoimmune disorders, and malignancies. The test is particularly useful in monitoring disease activity and treatment response in conditions like juvenile idiopathic arthritis or systemic lupus erythematosus. Normal values in children are generally lower than in adults and vary by age and gender.
