Iron overload condition resulting from repeated blood transfusions or increased iron absorption.

Full Definition

The pathological accumulation of iron in tissues, particularly the liver, heart, and endocrine organs, most commonly resulting from repeated blood transfusions in chronically anemic patients. In pediatric hematology, hemosiderosis is a significant complication in patients with thalassemia, sickle cell disease, or other conditions requiring regular transfusions. The condition can lead to organ dysfunction and requires monitoring with serum ferritin levels, MRI studies, and treatment with iron chelation therapy.
