Hydroxyurea is an oral medication that increases fetal hemoglobin production and reduces the frequency of vaso-occlusive crises in children with sickle cell disease. The drug works by stimulating the production of hemoglobin F, which does not sickle under low oxygen conditions. Studies have shown that hydroxyurea therapy in children reduces hospitalizations, pain episodes, and the need for blood transfusions while improving overall quality of life.
