L-glutamine
Oral amino acid supplement that reduces frequency of pain crises and acute chest syndrome episodes in sickle cell disease.
Full Definition
L-glutamine is a pharmaceutical-grade amino acid that has been approved as an oral therapy for sickle cell disease in patients 5 years and older. The mechanism of action is believed to involve reduction of oxidative stress and improvement in the redox potential of sickled red blood cells. Clinical studies have demonstrated reductions in pain crises, hospitalizations, and acute chest syndrome episodes. L-glutamine is administered as an oral powder and represents one of the few FDA-approved therapies specifically for pediatric sickle cell disease patients.
Usage
Usage note: Use L-glutamine (with hyphen) for the pharmaceutical preparation. Distinguish from over-the-counter supplements.
