mean corpuscular volume

Also written as: MCV — mean corpuscular volume

A measure of the average size of red blood cells, expressed in femtoliters, used to classify anemias in pediatric patients.

Full Definition

Mean corpuscular volume (MCV) is a key hematologic parameter that measures the average volume of individual red blood cells, expressed in femtoliters (fL). In pediatric hematology, MCV values vary significantly with age, with newborns having higher values that decrease through childhood. Low MCV (microcytosis) may indicate iron deficiency anemia or thalassemia, while high MCV (macrocytosis) can suggest vitamin B12 or folate deficiency, hypothyroidism, or certain medications. Age-appropriate reference ranges are crucial for accurate interpretation in children.

Usage

Usage note: Commonly abbreviated as MCV; ensure age-appropriate reference ranges are used.
