CD markers

Pronunciation: see-dee markers

Cluster of differentiation antigens used to identify and classify immune cell types and developmental stages.

Full Definition

CD (Cluster of Differentiation) markers are standardized cell surface molecules used to identify and characterize different types of immune cells. In pediatric immunology, specific CD marker patterns help diagnose primary immunodeficiencies and monitor immune system development. For example, CD3 identifies T cells, CD19 identifies B cells, and CD16/CD56 identify natural killer cells. The absence or abnormal expression of specific CD markers can indicate particular immunodeficiency syndromes.

Usage

Usage note: Always capitalize CD followed by the number; use + or - to indicate presence or absence.

In Context

  • "The absence of CD3+ T cells and presence of CD16+/CD56+ NK cells suggested SCID with an NK+ phenotype." — Flow cytometry report
  • "Normal CD markers excluded most primary immunodeficiency disorders in this patient." — Clinical assessment
