The recovery of immune function following treatment, particularly after bone marrow transplantation or gene therapy in immunodeficient children.

Full Definition

Immune reconstitution refers to the restoration of normal immune function in patients who have undergone treatments for primary immunodeficiencies. This process is most commonly observed following hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) or gene therapy, where new immune cells gradually populate the patient's system and begin functioning normally. The reconstitution process typically occurs in phases, with innate immunity recovering first, followed by adaptive immunity. Complete immune reconstitution can take months to years and is monitored through serial immune function testing, including lymphocyte counts, immunoglobulin levels, and vaccine responses.
