lymphopenia
Pronunciation: lim-foh-PEE-nee-uh
Abnormally low number of lymphocytes in the blood, often indicating immune system dysfunction.
Full Definition
Lymphopenia, also known as lymphocytopenia, is defined as a reduction in the absolute lymphocyte count below age-specific normal ranges. In pediatric patients, this condition can indicate various underlying immunodeficiency disorders, viral infections, autoimmune diseases, or adverse effects of medications. Different lymphocyte subsets (T-cells, B-cells, NK cells) may be affected to varying degrees. Persistent or severe lymphopenia in children warrants thorough immunological evaluation to identify potential primary immunodeficiency disorders that may require specific treatment interventions.
Usage
Usage note: May also be spelled 'lymphocytopenia'; both forms are acceptable in medical literature.
