lymphoid interstitial pneumonia
A chronic lung condition characterized by lymphocytic infiltration of lung tissue, often associated with immunodeficiency.
Full Definition
Lymphoid interstitial pneumonia (LIP) is a form of interstitial lung disease characterized by diffuse infiltration of the lung parenchyma with lymphocytes, plasma cells, and other inflammatory cells. In pediatric immunology, LIP is commonly associated with primary immunodeficiencies, particularly common variable immunodeficiency and HIV infection. Patients present with chronic cough, dyspnea, and hypoxemia. Chest imaging shows bilateral ground-glass opacities and reticulonodular patterns. LIP can progress to pulmonary fibrosis if untreated.
Usage
Usage note: Often abbreviated as LIP in clinical documentation; distinguish from other interstitial pneumonias.
