Acute otitis media (AOM) is one of the most common pediatric infections, involving inflammation and infection of the middle ear space behind the tympanic membrane. It typically affects children under 3 years due to immature eustachian tube anatomy and function. The condition is characterized by rapid onset of symptoms including otalgia, fever, and irritability. Diagnosis requires visualization of a bulging, erythematous tympanic membrane with purulent effusion.
