duodenal atresia

Pronunciation: doo-oh-DEE-nal uh-TREE-zhuh

Congenital blockage of the duodenum causing intestinal obstruction in newborns.

Full Definition

Duodenal atresia is a congenital anomaly where the duodenum is completely obstructed, either by atresia (absence of a segment) or stenosis (narrowing). It typically presents in the first day of life with bilious vomiting and feeding intolerance. The classic radiographic finding is the 'double bubble' sign on abdominal X-ray. There is a strong association with Down syndrome (trisomy 21), occurring in approximately 30% of cases. Surgical correction with duodenoduodenostomy or duodenojejunostomy is required.

Usage

Usage note: Distinguish from 'duodenal stenosis' which implies partial rather than complete obstruction.
