failure to thrive

A condition where a child fails to gain weight or grow at the expected rate for their age.

Full Definition

A clinical syndrome characterized by inadequate weight gain, poor linear growth, or both in infants and children. Defined as weight below the 3rd percentile for age or crossing two major percentile lines on standard growth charts. Can result from organic causes (medical conditions affecting nutrient absorption or metabolism), non-organic causes (inadequate caloric intake, psychosocial factors), or mixed etiology. Requires comprehensive evaluation including nutritional assessment, medical history, physical examination, and sometimes laboratory studies.

Usage

Usage note: Avoid judgmental language; focus on objective growth parameters rather than subjective assessments.
