febrile seizure

Pronunciation: FEE-brile or FEB-rile

Convulsions that occur in young children in association with fever but without central nervous system infection.

Full Definition

A type of seizure that occurs in children typically between 6 months and 5 years of age in the setting of fever, without evidence of intracranial infection or other defined cause. Simple febrile seizures are generalized, last less than 15 minutes, and do not recur within 24 hours. Complex febrile seizures have focal features, last longer than 15 minutes, or recur within 24 hours. While frightening for parents, simple febrile seizures are generally benign and do not increase the risk of epilepsy or developmental problems.

Usage

Usage note: Distinguish from other types of seizures; emphasize the fever association and generally benign nature.
