anuria

Pronunciation: ah-NEW-ree-ah

Complete absence of urine production, typically defined as urine output less than 100 mL per day.

Full Definition

Anuria refers to the complete cessation or severe reduction of urine production, clinically defined as urine output of less than 100 mL per day in adults or less than 0.5 mL/kg/hour in children. In pediatric nephrology, anuria is a critical finding that may indicate severe kidney dysfunction, urinary tract obstruction, or acute kidney injury. It requires immediate medical attention as it can lead to fluid overload, electrolyte imbalances, and metabolic acidosis. Anuria differs from oliguria, which refers to decreased but not absent urine production.

Usage

Usage note: Distinguish clearly from oliguria in clinical documentation.
