MAG3 (mercaptoacetyltriglycine) scan is a dynamic nuclear medicine study that assesses both renal function and urinary drainage. Unlike DMSA scans, MAG3 provides information about kidney perfusion, function, and drainage patterns over time. In pediatric patients, this study is particularly useful for evaluating suspected urinary obstruction, vesicoureteral reflux, and monitoring post-surgical drainage. The study involves injection of technetium-99m labeled MAG3 followed by sequential imaging over 20-30 minutes. Diuretic administration (furosemide) during the study can help differentiate obstructive from non-obstructive drainage patterns.
