Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) is a bacterial pathogen that releases Shiga toxins, which damage the endothelium of glomerular capillaries and other blood vessels. The most common serotype is O157:H7, though non-O157 serotypes are increasingly recognized. STEC infection typically begins with bloody diarrhea and can progress to hemolytic uremic syndrome, particularly in children under 5 years of age. Early recognition is crucial as antibiotic treatment may increase toxin release and worsen outcomes.
