gelastic seizure

Pronunciation: jeh-LAS-tik

A rare type of seizure characterized by inappropriate laughter or giggling, often associated with hypothalamic hamartomas.

Full Definition

Gelastic seizures present as episodes of unmotivated laughter or giggling that are typically not associated with mirth or happiness. They are most commonly seen with hypothalamic hamartomas but can occur with other epileptogenic lesions. The laughter is usually hollow, mechanical, or mirthless and may be accompanied by other autonomic signs. These seizures often begin in early childhood and may be associated with precocious puberty when caused by hypothalamic lesions. Recognition is important as they may be mistaken for behavioral issues.

Usage

Usage note: From Greek 'gelos' meaning laughter. Contrast with dacrystic (crying) seizures.
