HSCT
Also written as: HSCT — Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation
Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, a treatment involving replacement of diseased bone marrow with healthy stem cells.
Full Definition
Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) involves the infusion of hematopoietic stem cells to restore bone marrow function after high-dose chemotherapy or radiation. In pediatric oncology, HSCT is used for high-risk leukemias, bone marrow failure syndromes, and certain solid tumors. Transplants may be autologous (patient's own cells), allogeneic (donor cells), or haploidentical (half-matched family donor). The procedure requires extensive pre-transplant conditioning, careful donor matching, and prolonged post-transplant monitoring for complications such as graft-versus-host disease.
Usage
Usage note: Often used interchangeably with BMT, though HSCT is more technically precise.
