bifoveal fusion

The ability of both foveas to simultaneously fixate on the same target, creating a single binocular image.

Full Definition

Bifoveal fusion represents the highest level of binocular vision where both foveas (the central areas of highest visual acuity) simultaneously fixate on the same object. This creates a single, clear binocular image with optimal depth perception and stereopsis. The development of bifoveal fusion requires proper eye alignment, equal visual acuity in both eyes, and normal retinal correspondence. Disruption of this process, often due to strabismus or amblyopia, can lead to suppression or abnormal retinal correspondence. Testing bifoveal fusion is crucial in pediatric examinations as it indicates the quality of binocular vision development.

Usage note: Distinguish from peripheral fusion which occurs outside the foveal region.
