Fusion is the complex neurological process by which the visual cortex integrates slightly disparate images from both eyes into a unified, three-dimensional visual experience. This process requires proper eye alignment, similar visual acuity in both eyes, and intact neural pathways. Fusion can be divided into motor fusion (the ability to maintain eye alignment through vergence movements) and sensory fusion (the cortical blending of images). In pediatric patients, disruption of fusion due to strabismus, anisometropia, or visual deprivation can lead to suppression, diplopia, or abnormal binocular vision development. Assessment of fusion capabilities is crucial in pediatric eye care as it influences treatment decisions for strabismus and amblyopia.
