Full Definition

The Infant Aphakia Treatment Study (IATS) was a multicenter randomized clinical trial conducted from 2004-2009 that compared primary intraocular lens (IOL) implantation with contact lens correction in infants who underwent cataract surgery before 7 months of age. The study found no significant difference in visual acuity outcomes between the two treatment groups at 5 years of age, but showed higher rates of complications in the IOL group, including glaucoma development and need for additional surgeries. IATS results significantly influenced clinical practice by demonstrating that contact lens correction can achieve visual outcomes comparable to IOL implantation while avoiding some surgical complications, though both approaches require aggressive amblyopia therapy for optimal results.
