isoametropia

Pronunciation: eye-so-am-eh-TROH-pee-ah

A condition where both eyes have similar refractive errors.

Full Definition

Isoametropia refers to bilateral refractive errors that are approximately equal in magnitude and type, typically differing by less than 1.0 diopter between eyes. This condition is generally less amblyogenic than anisometropia because both eyes receive similarly focused or defocused images. However, significant bilateral ametropia can still result in bilateral amblyopia if uncorrected during critical visual development periods. Management typically involves bilateral optical correction.

Usage

Usage note: Distinguish carefully from anisometropia in clinical documentation.

In Context

  • "The patient presented with isoametropia of +4.00 diopters in both eyes, requiring immediate optical correction." — Pediatric refraction report
  • "Unlike anisometropia, isoametropia typically does not result in preferential fixation patterns." — Clinical research paper
