Full Definition

Sensory exotropia is a form of secondary strabismus that occurs when significant visual impairment in one eye disrupts the sensory mechanisms maintaining binocular alignment. Unlike primary exotropia, this condition results from an underlying ocular pathology such as congenital cataract, optic nerve hypoplasia, or severe refractive error that prevents normal visual development. The poor-seeing eye gradually drifts outward due to lack of fusion stimulus. Early detection and treatment of the underlying visual impairment is crucial to prevent irreversible strabismus and further vision loss. Management focuses on addressing the primary visual problem while considering the need for strabismus surgery.
